Chance seedling found in 1817 by Joel Gillet, which he gave to his son to plant on the banks of the Ohio River. Originally called "Gillett's Seedling" it was renamed the "Rome Beauty" in 1832. Slightly tart, firm, crisp and juicy. Best for pies, sauce and baked.
